I’ve lived in California for over 25 years and have visited Carlsbad multiple times, so I can confidently say anytime is great time to visit this city. California’s various climates and nearly perfect sunny weather is one of the top reason it’s a popular state to visit!
Carlsbad features a coastal Mediterranean climate with wet, mild winters and warm summers. June gloom is a thing, so bring a light coat for the foggy summer days.

Every coastal town has that one beach everyone talks about—and in Carlsbad, it’s none other than Tamarack State Beach. Keep reading to see why it’s the best beach in my opinion.
Tamarack State Beach
Address: Tamarack Ave & Carlsbad Blvd
Top activities: Surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, walking, rollerblading, swimming, and fishing.
Amenities: Restroom, picnic tables, water fountains, outdoor showers, and lifeguards during summer.
Parking: There’s a paid parking lot near Tamarack Avenue and Carlsbad Boulevard. Street parking is also available.
Hours: Daily from 5:00 am-10:00 pm
Tamarack State Beach is my favorite beach in Carlsbad and also the most popular!
I’ve been to Carlsbad twice during the winter and I’ve learned no trip is complete without a visit to this wide-sandy California beach. From devouring fish tacos and journaling my heart out, to strolling along the coastline while admiring the scenery, this beach exceeds expectations in the most beautiful ways.
Starting south of Tamarack Avenue, this beach extends through the charming Carlsbad Village. It’s prime location is probably why locals also call it Tamarack Beach or Carlsbad State Beach. This beach is great for swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, and boogie-boarding.
Besides the wide flat sandy shores, there are shoreline sidewalks perfect for walking, biking, or rollerblading and a paved pathway on top of the bluff offering scenic views of the coast and town.

North Carlsbad Beaches
Address: 2499 Ocean Street, Carlsbad, California 92008
Top activities: Swimming, walking, running, and sunbathing
Amenities: No lifeguard, showers, or restrooms
Parking: Several beach access points with some free street parking
Minutes away from the Oceanside border are the North Carlsbad Beaches. Here you’ll find beautiful coastal views in a secluded spot tucked along the shoreline. It’s great for walking, running, sunbathing, and swimming!
Even though this area includes a mix of private and state-owned properties, all the beaches here are publicly accessible. Because it’s a string of beaches, there are several access points along Beech Ave, Christiansen Way, Carlsbad Village Drive, Rue des Chateaux, and Grand Avenue. The main entry point can be found on Ocean Street.
Keep in mind there are no amenities here, so plan accordingly.
South Carlsbad State Beach
Address: 7106 Carlsbad Blvd, Carlsbad, California 92011
Top activities: Swimming, fishing, picnicking, surfing, running, walking, boogie boarding, hiking, sunbathing, and camping
Amenities: The restrooms and showers at the campgrounds are coin-operated. There are also fit pits and a camp store. Lifeguards are only on duty during peak season and times.
Parking: There’s free parking near Batiquitos Lagoon and along Carlsbad Boulevard. If you’re camping, parking is free at the campground.
Hours: Open daily from 6:00 am-10:00 pm
Are you looking for a beach camping destination? If you’re nodding yes, then this beach offers an excellent campground atop rugged cliffs.
During summer, the South Carlsbad State Beach Campground becomes a hot spot for families, couples, and tourists offering a refreshing way to cool off and relax under the sun. Thanks to its location, the beach below feels secluded, with a staircase from the campground offering easy access.
This campground is extremely popular with locals. If you’re planning to camp, make sure you book ahead to get a spot!
Besides camping, South Carlsbad State Beach offers plenty of other activities, including swimming and surfing. It’s sandy, vast shores also makes it a great beach for taking a stroll, running, picnicking, and watching the sunset.
South Ponto Beach
Address: Carlsbad Blvd and North of La Costa Blvd
Top activities: Surfing, beach volleyball, sunset walks, running, swimming, and more
Parking: There’s a paid parking lot at the southernmost part of the beach. Free parking is limited here.
Hours: Open daily from 6:00 am-10:00 pm
South Ponto Beach is hands-down the best beach in Carlsbad for watching the sunset. When I was driving the Coast Hwy 101, South Ponto’s natural and wild beauty drew me in and I had to stop.
It’s the least developed beach in the county, yet has the widest coastline so you can really soak up the colorful skies and admire the waves crash onto the jetty.
This secluded beach is a great destinations for families as it has showers and public restrooms. It’s also popular for surfing, sunset walks, running, swimming, and relaxing on the beach. If you’re a beach volleyball player, bring you own net to play and soak the lively, scenic vibes!
Terramar Beach Carlsbad
Address: 5399 County Highway S21, California 92008
Top activities: Exploring the Carlsbad Tide Pools, sunbathing, walking, swimming, and surfing.
Amenities: Lifeguards will patrol the beach in a vehicle.
Parking: Free street parking is available on Carlsbad Boulevard.
Hours: Open during low tide.
Another beach worth visiting in Carlsbad, especially if you’re a surfer, is Terramar Beach. It’s located between the Palomar Airport and Carlsbad Power Plant.
This hidden seaside treasure is open to the public at low tide. During low tide, you’ll have the chance to explore the Carlsbad Tide Pools and spot the various small fish, urchins, sea anemones, barnacles, and starfish.
When high tide hits, this narrow beach completely disappears beneath the crashing waves, making it a dreamy spot for surfing. Check the tide schedules to plan accordingly! Keep in mind there are no life guards on duty or public restrooms here.
Lesser known beaches in Carlsbad, CA
Believe it or not, Carlsbad has some beaches off-the-beaten-path that feature fewer crowds and stunning views. From hiking trails and lagoons to biking the Promenade, keep on reading to explore these beaches.
Batiquitos Lagoon Trail
Address: 7380 Gabbiano Lane, Carlsbad, CA 92011
Top activities: Hiking, running, walking, bird watching, photography and picnicking
Amenities: Restroom, viewing deck, and picnic tables.
Parking: There’s limited free parking at the trailhead, and street parking is available on residential streets.
Hours: Open daily from 9:00 am-3:00 pm
Batiquitos Lagoon is a stunning ecological reserve spanning 561-acres. This coastal wetland supports a rich diversity of wildlife, including fish, plant life, and over 200 bird species. I’ve been told hikers have spotted some endangered birds such as the California Least Tern and and Snowy Plover!
The 1.3-mile hiking trail along the lagoon is relatively easy and offers stunning views of the bird sanctuary. Besides hiking, other top things to do here are running, enjoying the Nature Center Viewing Deck, and having a afternoon picnic.

Robert Frazee State Beach
Address: 3145-3027 Ocean St, Carlsbad, CA 92008
Top activities: Watching the sunset, surfing, fishing, and walking or biking the Promenade.
Amenities: The Promenade and Carlsbad Seawall.
Parking: Free street parking is readily available here, and a paid parking lot is located on Ocean Street.
Hours: Open daily from 6:00 am-10:00 pm
If you’re visiting Tamarack Beach, it’s only fair that you check out Robert Frazee State Beach! It’s an extension of Carlsbad State Beach, so you can expect a similar spacious, sandy shoreline.
It starts at the beginning of the Promenade. Once you hit the Carlsbad Seawall, you’ll know you’ve arrived at the beach.
Tamarack Beach is perfect for anyone craving serene coastal views, paved walking paths overlooking the sea, and biking along the Promenade. It’s another excellent location for watching the colorful sunset in Carlsbad!
Warm Water Jetty Beach
Address: 4315 Carlsbad Blvd, Carlsbad, CA 92008
Top activities: Fishing, surfing, boogie-boarding, hiking at Agua Hedionda Lagoon Trails
Amenities: Restrooms are available, and during peak season, there are lifeguards on duty.
Parking: There’s a paid parking lot on Tamarack Avenue and free street parking on Carlsbad Boulevard.
Hours: Daily from 6:00 am-10:00 pm
Warm Water Jetty Beach is one of the most unique beaches in Carlsbad because it’s equal parts watercraft recreation area and ecological reserve. Similar to Batiquitos Lagoon Trail, this beach is dream destination for outdoor enthusiast and hikers alike – it’s my favorite thing about this beach!
Unlike the other shorelines, this beach sits between a power-generating plant and the Agua Hedionda Lagoon – a 400-acre open-water lagoon with scenic hiking trails. Here, you’ll find a long sandspit that preserves and protect this lagoon.
It’s part of Carlsbad State Beach and located at its southernmost point. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you start seeing giant smoke stacks above a power plant. This beach is great for rock exploration, watching the sunsets, surfing, and hiking to see the coastal fauna and flora in Carlsbad.

✅ What’s nicer, Oceanside or Carlsbad?
It depends, but hear me out.
I spent several days exploring Carlsbad in February and March, I can confidently say it does not disappoint! Carlsbad is charming, quaint, and the landscape is breathtaking. Carlsbad is great for those craving luxury and adventure with a laid-back beach charm.
The locals are also super friendly in Carlsbad.
I never felt so welcomed by a beach community, than I did at that Farmer’s Market! For instance, I watched a vendor sell his last two loaves of gluten-free bread to a woman, who then kindly offered me one to enjoy when she learned I was a tourist and she was a local. How incredibly kind!!
Oceanside is a completely different feel than Carlsbad, but just as vibrant. It’s bigger, has more museums, and is famous for having the longest wooden pier on the West Coast. If you’re looking for vibrant culture and arts scene with gorgeous beaches, Oceanside is a better choice.
